about

“Sunlight At Stratford Station is about a very specific thing that happened when a relationship I was in ended. I was looking for a new place to live (we had a house together, but I’d moved out and had to find somewhere else) and I'd just come back from seeing a horrible apartment in Stratford, East London. Really horrible. Small, dark, dirty, bad area. . .everything about it was awful. And to top it all off, I couldn't even really afford it. It was right at the top of my budget and it was disgusting. So, I was on the platform at Stratford station, waiting to get the Overground train back to where I was staying, feeling unbelievably sad and unsure about the future when, just for a brief moment, the sun came out and hit the people waiting across from me on the platform. And it lit them up. It came out three times, each time slightly more intensely, and each time the people across from me glowed a bit brighter (which is why the synths get brighter and more intense as the song goes on) and it was the first time in months that I actually felt good. It made no sense to feel good - there was no reason for it at all. . .two minutes earlier I had been sulking and sad, but for some reason, the sun coming out like that made me feel positive for the first time in a long while. It felt like a turning point, where I was able to start feeling like I belonged in London again and everything was eventually going to be okay.”
